April 29, 2021 – April is Financial Literacy Month and local nonprofits, government agencies and financial institutions are working together to aid all New Mexicans with financial education. The groups created MoneySmartNM.org two years ago as the central web hub to provide free financial help on everything from taxes to savings, how to talk to children about money, and from credit to retirement, and so much more.
MoneySmartNM.org grew out of the local Money Smart Week New Mexico and national Money Smart Week, a celebration in April to help New Mexicans and Americans understand finance and budgeting. Several free personal and business resources are available in both English and Spanish.
Financial literacy is especially important to New Mexico as the state ranks 47th for overall financial literacy, according to WalletHub. New Mexico is also one of 29 states that do not require financial literacy education in order to graduate. Some state lawmakers this past legislative session, however, have made it a priority with the introduction of House Bill 163. The bill was passed by the House but did not reach the Senate by the end of the session.
MoneySmartNM.org sponsors like The Loan Fund work to help those who would like to become small business owners or help business owners expand their businesses. It all starts with a good, solid foundation in financial education. Find free information to help shape your fit financial future on moneysmartnm.org.
