Looking for a retirement business and a way to reconnect with family, Klarissa and Christopher McKay sold their home in Albuquerque and moved about 30 miles south to Belen, where they purchased a seven-acre parcel off Interstate 25.
After doing some research, they discovered a need for an additional RV park in the small town, particularly in the area they were eyeing. The parcel is located across from the Valencia County Fairgrounds and the Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Grounds and includes a horse boarding area.
“We started asking around and found that the other RV parks lacked amenities,” Klarissa said, adding that they had also conducted market research and a feasibility study to help plan for their business, which opened in October 2024. “Here, we offer a dog park, horse boarding, on-site RV service and maintenance, and a coffee and gift shop. We also offer free ice Fridays for our long term tenants.”
The Hacienda Del Las Flores RV Park also features a dog bath station, high-speed internet, and plans for on-site laundry facilities. It also helps that its located near a convenience store, a bar and grill, and a Walmart.
Many of the park’s occupants are contractors, including electricians working on the Facebook expansion in nearby Los Lunas. And local residents have also taken notice of the business, purchasing drinks and goods from the gift shop.
Though their marketing includes Facebook, Instagram, a Google business page, and social media posts in RV Life, the 39 RV slots are filled year-round.
The couple discovered The Loan Fund through an internet search after approaching commercial lenders.
“If we hadn’t found The Loan Fund, we were almost ready to return to general contracting full-time,” said Christopher, who owns a custom home remodeling business that was co-founded by his wife.
“The Loan Fund came to our aid when we really didn’t know what we were going to do,” Klarissa added. “We had already purchased the property, and all of our money was tied up in it. We were turned away by several big commercial banks because we were a new business and considered not viable. When we found The Loan Fund, they took a chance on us and truly believed in our vision. We wouldn’t have been able to get started without them.
