A Better You Beauty/Barber Academy

by Loan Fund Staff

Patrick Jenkins opened A Better U Beauty/Barber Academy in Albuquerque nearly 18 years ago with the goal of creating barbers and entrepreneurs in the beauty and personal care industries.

Raised in Louisiana, Mr. Jenkins moved to New Mexico in 1986 and received his barber’s license in 1992. His first barbershop was in the International District a few miles from Kirtland Air Force Base. The one-barber shop soon became known for having one of the best stylists in this area.

In 2006, Mr. Jenkins opened A Better U Beauty/Barber Academy. He expanded the business in 2018 after 250 students graduated from the school and purchased a building to house the school, which offers cuts, colors, braiding, and facials at a discount from student estheticians and stylists.

The school has graduated a few hundred students who have opened their shops across New Mexico. Mr. Jenkins has taught them the ropes so they can make a living, help their families, or grow their own businesses.

Though there has been overall steady growth, Mr. Jenkins recalls a difficult time in the business’ history, which happened during the global pandemic and the governor of New Mexico ordered all businesses closed.

“The Loan Fund came in at my most difficult time during the pandemic, and really helped me to survive,” he said.
